"INVESTITURE ADDRESS"

(Given during the Investiture Ceremony of Dr. James L. Tan on February 27, 2010)

It is indeed an honor to day to receive the recognition of being the first President of Grace Christian College. I am also privileged to have served more than 20 years in a leadership position in this God-established and God-honoring educational institution. I count it a joy and a privilege to serve Him and all of you these many years.

I also am touched and moved by the groundswell of love and support for me. It is evidence of God’s love, care and blessing. As the servant of Abraham, Eliezer said, after he found a wife for Isaac, the son of his Master, “I, being in the way, the Lord led me.” (Genesis 24:27). I can relate to him the same way.

Today is Historic! Our Founders may not have envisioned this when, 60 years ago, they started the school by faith with only 185 students in 1950. But my Mother, Founder of this school envisioned and planned a college, called “  Grace

Christian College” more than Twenty Five Years ago. Today is the culmination of her dream.

Without the diligent and faithful efforts of the college planning team, this dream would not have come into fruition. I would like to express my profound gratitude to all those who have partnered with me in various capacities over the past several years to make this day a reality. It was truly a team effort. May the Lord richly reward you in His time and ways.

I would like to express my profound gratitude to all those who have partnered with me in various capacities over the past several years to make this day a reality. It was truly a team effort. May the Lord richly reward you in His time and ways.

As we look to the future, there are 3 things I would like to highlight: First, this College will be an outstanding and vibrant university, solidly grounded in Christian principles. Some months ago, a High School Student leader blurted out when he introduced our College, that it will be the “UNIVERSITY OF THE FUTURE.” This phrase caught me by surprise, yet filled me with joy as it reflects my desire as well. Let us commend him for his “Prophetic Uttering.” In God’s time-frame, nothing is impossible – He is the “Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End!”

I believe Grace Christian College can be a topnotch academic institution.

We are building on a solid foundation. As I always stated in my commencement addresses: “Grace Christian High School is not an ordinary school”. Yes! The heritage of our school, its Vision statement, faith and vision of our Founders and the Christian education philosophy – all these give us a solid foundation from which to grow.

We have graduated more than 12,000 students over the last half century. Many of our Alumni have gone on to accomplish great things in their professions. In fact, I just learned yesterday that one of our graduates placed 6th in the recent Government Medical Board Exam. Last year, another topped the Board in Medical Technology. These are only recent achievements. We are proud to send such outstanding men and women into the world, and we look forward to continuing this tradition of excellence.

We will continue to offer our students – now including the collegiate level – the best education we can give them. They will be under the tutelage of effective professors with topnotch academic credentials. Our graduates will be equipped with a Christian World-View, as they become leaders in the 21st century. They will see the world and interact with the world from a Biblical viewpoint and perspective. The Bible will be their guide and compass for life.

Secondly, I would like to see Grace Christian College develop CENTERS OF EXCELLENCE in the courses we offer. We will strive to become intellectual leaders in these areas while instilling in our students the important quality of INTEGRITY in their marketplace, society and all areas they trod.

I echo the words of President John F. Kennedy when he said: “Ask not what your country will do for you, but ask what you can do for your country.” The school has given and will continue to give you the best education. After you leave the portals of Grace, what can you give back to the school and the country?

Finally, we live in a CHALLENGING world and in challenging times. It is my fervent desire that Grace Christian College is like a city of light on the hill, and that our students and graduates are salt of the earth. To our alumni and friends of Grace, we need your help and support as partners of our school. A vast opportunity lies ahead. Let us join hands to build this school into an institution that will “Integrate Academic Excellence with Biblical Truths to Produce Global Christian Leaders.” I cannot do it alone. I need your help and partnership.

How can you help in this task?

First, I covet your prayers for me. The Bible says, “Rejoice evermore, PRAY WITHOUT CEASING; In everything give thanks” (I Thessalonians 5:16-18). Pray for me regularly and God will work wonders in the Grace Ministries.

Two, we need your partnership. Send your children and introduce your friends’ children to our school. Help us spread the word that Grace Christian College is a place where they will receive an excellent education and at the same time Biblical teachings to develop them into “Global Leaders with Integrity.”

Third, we need People and Resources. We need outstanding Faculty members to come teach the courses we offer. Only dedicated Professors will enlighten students who in turn will excel and motivate others to learn. The cycle goes on!

Finally, with excitement, cooperation, and God leading us, let us hold hands and partner together to bring Grace Christian College to a level that will glorify God and point man to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Thank you again for your support, love and care for the Grace Ministry! God-speed, and May God bless you!
